About Us
The Access to Information Unit, Office of the Prime Minister, was established to spearhead and guide the implementation and administration of the Access to Information Act 2002. The Act gives members of the public the legal right to view or receive copies of official documents held by government bodies, subject to exemptions. The law also gives persons the right to ask for information concerning them to be changed if it is incomplete, misleading or out of date.
Our Mission
- To provide guidance and training for government bodies on how to interpret and administer the Act;
- To identify and address difficult or problematic issues arising from implementation of the Act;
- To provide policy recommendations on how best these problems may be addressed;
- To monitor public authorities’ compliance with the Act
- To educate the public in respect of their rights and obligations under the Act.
Our Vision
To play a lead role in transforming Jamaica into the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business by promoting and entrenching the principle of access to information in the public sector and the wider society as a tool for transparency, accountability and good governance.
